Welcome to art
Our students are taught the 4 Steps to Art Criticism: Describe, Analyze, Interpret and Judgement (Decide).
A few of the Arts Common Core Connections are:
- Describe: What do you see in this artwork? Make a list of all the things you see.
- Analyze: How is the work organized? How has the artist used the elements
and/or the principles of design? - Interpret: What do you think the artist is saying? What is happening? What is the meaning? Interpretations can be different from student to student based on feelings and life experiences.
- Judge: What do you think about this work? Compare and Contrast. Is it realistic or abstract? Students should be able to support why they like or dislike the work of art. These skills are useful in all aspects of a students career.
A few of the Arts Common Core Connections are:
- Use similes, metaphors or figurative language to describe artwork and compare with other students in class.
- Display a poster of a work of art, utilizing Response to Art as a writing prompt.
- Write down something new learned in art class using art terminology.
- Write a new title for an artwork. Write supporting arguments as to whyyou schose this new title. Students will share titles, vote for best title, and debate as to why they prefer the title.
